AB3 Acid Brush Tin handle #3
The AB3 Acid Brush #3 is a small, disposable utility brush featuring a tin handle and natural bristles, typically made from horsehair or hog bristles. As part of the "acid brush" series, the #3 size implies a larger brush head compared to the #1 and #2 sizes. This increased surface area makes it ideal for applying a greater volume of liquid or covering broader areas more efficiently, while still maintaining a level of control superior to larger, general-purpose brushes. These brushes are valued in aviation for their simplicity, low cost, and the crucial advantage of being easily discarded after use, which helps prevent cross-contamination.
Key Characteristics:
- Natural Bristles: Commonly made from horsehair or hog bristles, which are resilient, chemically resistant, and effective for controlled application of various liquids.
- Tin Handle: A lightweight and economical handle, crimped to secure the bristles, designed for single-use or short-term applications.
- Larger Size (#3): Offers a wider brush head than #1 or #2, making it suitable for tasks requiring more coverage or the application of more material per stroke, while still offering a degree of precision.
- Disposable: Intended for single-use or limited use, crucial for maintaining cleanliness and preventing contamination when working with different chemicals or components.
- Cost-Effective: Their straightforward design and mass production make them a very economical consumable tool.
- Versatile: Capable of being used with a wide array of liquids, including solvents, adhesives, fluxes, lubricants, paints, and corrosion inhibitors.
Application in Aviation:
- General Cleaning with Solvents: Used for applying cleaning solvents (e.g., SkyKleen 1000) to larger components or surfaces for degreasing, removing hydraulic fluid spills, or preparing areas for painting/bonding, where a larger brush speeds up the process.
- Corrosion Preventive Compound (CPC) Application: Ideal for applying CPCs to larger internal structures, hidden cavities, or external surfaces of components that require robust corrosion protection.
- Lubrication of Larger Areas: For applying grease (e.g., AeroShell Grease 22) or other lubricants to larger bearings, gearboxes, or mechanical assemblies where a slightly wider application area is beneficial.
- Primer/Paint Application for Touch-ups: Suitable for applying primers or touch-up paints to small-to-medium sized areas that require precision but also efficiency.
- Surface Treatment Solutions: Used for applying etching solutions, chemical conversion coatings (e.g., BONDERITE M-CR 120, if applied by brush), or other surface preparation compounds to metal surfaces.
